About – Ai Tatebayashi

Ai Tatebayashi is a Japanese illustrator. She grew up in Yokohama city where the biggest seaport in Japan was located and was influenced by modern Western cultures since the 19th century. She enjoyed looking at Norman Rockwell’s posters, illustrated American pin-up girls, and so on, which stimulated her interest in American culture particularly. She also had been dreaming of studying illustration someday. After working at an advertising agency in Japan, She moved to New York City for an intensive study of illustration at the School of Visual Arts, MFA program. People’s feelings or characters are important for her work. She loves observing people and drawing them with her unique view and sense of humor. She has been working as a freelance illustrator since 2003. Her work has appeared in many U.S. papers and magazines. Now she lives in Fukuoka, Japan, and enjoys being surrounded by great nature.

Profile – 舘林　愛　

東京生まれ、横浜育ち。
高校在学中より、ノーマン・ロックウェルの絵を眺めながら、横浜港の向こうにある外国文化に思いを馳せると同時に、イラストレーションを学びたいという思いを密かに温めていた。立教大学文学部フランス文学科卒業後、広告代理店で営業を５年弱ほど務め、2000年に渡米。ニューヨークの美術大学、スクール・オヴ・ヴィジュアルアーツの大学院イラストレーション学科に学ぶ。在学中、911のテロを経験。混乱の最中でも、教授ら現地アーティストたちが逞しく踏ん張る姿を目の当たりにする。MFA取得後は現地でフリーランスとして、アメリカの雑誌、新聞、書籍など主にエディトリアル分野にて活躍。
長崎のヒバクシャ故・谷口稜曄（たにぐちすみてる）氏に複数回に渡ってインタビューを行い”谷口さんの生涯：その時と今”をテーマに96ページの絵本を完成させアメリカで出版。後に日本語版「生きているかぎり語り続ける」（主婦の友社）も出され、病床に臥す谷口氏に直接手渡すことがかなった。この本は国の資料として国立長崎原爆死没者追悼平和祈念館にも貯蔵されている。
2018年に帰国し、福岡に移住。現在は九州の豊かな自然にインスパイアされながら制作活動を続けている。
